AG Ferguson’s lawsuit reveals Comcast deceived customers, charged for service plans without consent

In 2016, the Attorney General in the state of Washington filed a $100 million dollar lawsuit against Comcast for deceiving customers and charging for service plans without consent.  Seems Comcast is selling service plan services (SPP) as a way to cover wiring and equipment. The Attorney General’s office sees the SPP differently

Due to limitations in the SPP Terms and Conditions and the free service calls and repair work provided by the Comcast Guarantee,
the SPP often ends up failing to cover any repairs at all.

In addition, it seems that many of the people who were paying for SPP services were told the services would be free, or even worse were still signed up for the SPP service even when they did not want the service.

The Attorney General’s Office analyzed a random sample of recorded sales calls between Comcast and 150 Washingtonians. Comcast did not even mention the SPP to nearly half the sample. Additional consumers in the sample explicitly rejected the SPP, but Comcast signed them up anyway. Consequently, Comcast enrolled more than half of these subscribers without their consent.

Needless to say, it’s always good to go through your bills and make sure you aren’t paying for anything that isn’t supposed to be there, and if there is a line item, on your bill, that you don’t understand, you need to reach out to the business in question and ask questions until you are satisfied with the answer you are given.

Comcast is not the 1st and wont be the last company to try to slip products that they charge for, or sign up people without consent. Its called putting the company bottom line above its customers. Remember Wells Fargo and the millions of “fake accounts” they are accused of opening.
